# Personal memory and chat memory settings

> Save private memories Hive can use in your regular chats, control whether conversations carry earlier turns, and delete everything you have saved.

Hive has three different kinds of memory, and it helps to keep them apart:

This page covers personal memory and the two **chat memory** settings that decide whether a conversation can use
its own earlier turns.

## Personal memory

Personal memories are short notes Hive can take into account in your chats — for example "I manage the Northern
region accounts" or "I prefer answers as bullet points with the numbers first".

Open **Settings → Account → Memory** ("Manage your private memories").

### Limits

* Up to **40** memories.
* Each memory up to **1,000** characters.
* Up to **4,000** characters across all your memories.

### How personal memory is used — and not used

* It is **private to you**. It is stored with your own account and nobody else in the workspace can read or use it.
* It is used only in your **regular chats** in Ask Hive — not by agents, and not by workflows.
* Hive treats it as **context, not instructions or authorisation**. A saved memory can never grant you access,
  approve an action, or change what Hive is allowed to do.
* It is only used when all three switches allow it: the workspace's **Allow chat memory**, your account's **Chat
  memory** preference, and your **Use my saved memories** toggle.

### Delete all memories

Choose **Delete all memories**, type `DELETE MY MEMORIES` to confirm, and choose **Permanently delete memories**.
This "deletes your saved memories and disables their use. It does not delete past chats or workspace automation
rules."

## Chat memory: using earlier turns

Separately from personal memory, a conversation normally sends Hive a rolling summary and the most recent turns,
so you can ask follow-up questions like "and what about last quarter?". Two settings control this.

### Your preference

**Settings → Account → Preferences → Chat memory**: "Allow earlier turns from this conversation to be included in a
new prompt." It applies to your regular chats only and does not change agent capabilities or workspace policy.

### The workspace setting

**Settings → Products → Chat memory → Allow chat memory** is on by default. Every member can see it; only Owners
and Admins can change it (**Save for workspace**).

When it is off, Hive withholds earlier turns from every new prompt in the workspace — even if a client resends the
transcript — and stops writing the rolling conversation summary, so the workspace no longer accumulates a record of
conversations. Each message is then answered on its own, and personal memories are not used either.

<Tip>
  If Hive suddenly seems to "forget" what you said two messages ago, check whether an Admin has turned off **Allow
  chat memory**, or whether your own **Chat memory** preference is off.
